Questions and answers about the Swiss Travel Pass

Children under 6 travel free of charge. Children aged at least 6 and under 16 travel free with the Swiss Family Card as long as they are accompanied by at least one parent holding a valid Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card. The Swiss Family Card is issued free of charge. To do so, select the number of children travelling with you on the booking screen. The Swiss Family Card is strictly in combination with a parent and child always travelling together. Children who are not travelling with their parent will need to purchase a Child Swiss Travel Pass where the price is 50% discounted of adult pass. For grandparents and other relatives, such as aunts and uncles, the Swiss Family Card is not applicable. The child will need to acquire a separate pass or a valid ticket. Young people under the age of 25 receive a 30% discount on the Swiss Travel Pass with the Swiss Travel Pass Youth. The services included are the same.
No, there is no discount for senior citizens for the Swiss Travel Pass.
The Swiss Travel Pass is valid from midnight on the start date. For example, if you buy a 4-day pass with a start date of 24 July, the pass will be valid from 00:00 a.m. on 24 July and will expire at 05:00 a.m. on 28 July. The last trip must be completed by 5 a.m. and cannot be extended.
Trains and buses in Switzerland are included in the pass. However, seat reservations on panoramic trains are not included. Discounted travel on mountain railways (such as cable cars, funicular railways and cogwheel railways) is included. Urban transport (buses, trams) is included in 90 towns and cities. Public boat trips are included, except for special trips.
The Swiss Travel Pass covers all journeys on trains, buses and boats – including premium panoramic trains such as the Glacier Express and Bernina Express, to name but a few. The map gives you an overview of the area of validity. Seat reservations are compulsory on most tourist trains and must be booked separately. With the Swiss Travel Pass, you also benefit from free admission to over 500 museums. You can also enjoy discounts of up to 50% on most mountain railways and cable cars, as well as free travel on public transport in over 90 Swiss towns and cities.

Seat reservations are required on most panoramic trains. This leads to additional costs (price varies depending on the provider). Travel on panoramic trains is included in the Swiss Travel Pass; you only have to pay for the seat reservation. Reservations can generally be made at the earliest three months before the trip.
